Halloween’s roots are in Samhain which was an ancient Celtic festival. In Gaelic culture the festival of Samhain was a celebration of the end of the harvest season and can also be regarded as the Celtic New Year.
This festival was traditionally used by the Celtic pagans to slaughter livestock for winter food supplies and to take stock of provisions.
These ancient people believed that on this night the boundary between the living and the deceased dissolved.
This was the night when the dead became dangerous and caused problems such as sickness or damaged crops.
There would be festivals with bonfires, where bones of slaughtered animals were thrown in and they would wear masks and costumes in an attempt to copy the evil spirits or to appease them.
